Wedding bells ring on Backstage: designer bridal gowns

Any girl who manages to get the man of her dreams to drop to his knees and propose would then turn her attention to the next most important thing: the dress. One does not get married in just any old rag - and Charmaine knows that - even though she normally glides around the college in her sporty dance gear or funky party clothes. Ready to be transformed into a dream bride of the twenty first century, Charmaine needed something special to wear.

Enter Hip Hop - South African designers extraordinaire, well known for their exquisite designs, luxurious fabrics and unfailing glamour - who were invited by Backstage to create the perfect wedding dress for Charmaine. The designers went to the task with the professionalism and style that has already made Hip Hop a sought after label in South Africa. Hip Hop designer, Kathy Page Wood says, "Charmaine was a wonderful character to dress. The challenge was huge and initially rather daunting, but Backstage fell in love with our ideas from day one! We chose the colour of the fabric carefully, to complement the secret setting of the wedding, and chose a delicate and intricate design to reflect the rosy hue of the happy, blushing bride." Metres and metres of the palest sunset pink raw silk, thousands of beautiful crystal beads and layers of tulle make for one of the most exquisite wedding dresses ever. On screen, Charmaine was overwhelmed with enthusiasm for the dress and in real life, actress Lorcia Cooper, who plays Charmaine couldn't help getting a little attached to the exquisite garment too - "It feels like a real wedding," she said, "and sometimes I wish it was, so that I could keep the dress for my daughters one day!"
